UFC 317 Predictions: Underdogs, Upsets, and Breakdowns
With UFC 317 just around the corner, fight fans are gearing up for a stacked card featuring rising stars, seasoned contenders, and title implications across multiple divisions. Below are my predictions for each fight on the card, including underdog picks and key factors that could define the night.
Charles Oliveira (+340) vs. Ilia Topuria
Pick: Charles Oliveira This is the boldest pick on the card, but one that could pay off big. Charles Oliveira is no stranger to adversity he’s the all time UFC leader in submissions and finishes. In this matchup, he’ll need to walk down the undefeated Ilia Topuria, who brings devastating power and pinpoint accuracy. The key to this fight lies in whether Oliveira can absorb Topuria’s early power and close the distance.
Topuria will look to keep it standing, avoid clinches, and punish Oliveira at range. However, if Oliveira manages to smother Topuria, initiate a clinch, and drag the fight into his world on the ground, the tide shifts. Watch for Oliveira’s signature move when hurt he tends to drop to his back and invite his opponent into a trap. If Topuria accepts that invitation, he may be stepping into danger.
Prediction: Oliveira by submission if he survives early; otherwise, Topuria by KO/TKO.
Alexandre Pantoja (-220) vs. Kai Kara-France
Pick: Alexandre Pantoja Pantoja is arguably the most complete fighter in the flyweight division today. His pressure, grappling, and fight IQ are elite. Kara-France brings grit and striking power, but he’s struggled against top-tier fighters like Brandon Moreno. Pantoja has already beaten Moreno twice and is coming in with momentum as the reigning flyweight champ. Kara-France on the other hand, has lost to Moreno twice.
Prediction: Pantoja via decision or submission after wearing Kara-France down.
Brandon Royval (+107) vs. Joshua Van
Pick: Brandon Royval Van’s boxing is elite, and his hand speed might be the fastest in the UFC right now. But this is a major step up in competition. Royval has gone five rounds with champions and faced killers the likes of Moreno and Pantoja. His unpredictability and cardio could frustrate Van over three rounds.
Prediction: Royval wins by decision through relentless pace, awkward attacks, and eventually dragging the fight to the ground.
Beneil Dariush (-115) vs. Renato Moicano
Pick: Beneil Dariush Moicano has looked great in his recent wins, but when he’s faced elite competition, the gap has shown. Dariush has consistently fought top-10 lightweights and has the grappling chops to avoid danger on the ground. Expect Dariush to mix his wrestling and striking to neutralize Moicano’s offense.
Prediction: Dariush by submission (RNC or arm-triangle), possibly in round 2 or 3.
Felipe Lima (-173) vs. Payton Talbott
Pick: Felipe Lima This is as close to a 50/50 as it gets. Talbott is tall, long, and powerful, while Lima is shorter but more compact and well-rounded. Lima’s five-round experience outside the UFC and his wrestling give him the edge. If he can clinch and grind Talbott against the fence, he’ll sap the explosiveness from Talbott’s game.
Still, if Talbott keeps it standing and avoids the mat, he has one-punch KO potential.
Prediction: Lima by decision, with cage control and takedowns as the difference.
Gregory Rodrigues (-212) vs. Jack Hermansson
Pick: Gregory Rodrigues “Robocop” Rodrigues is a brutal finisher with KO power and solid jiu-jitsu. Hermansson is tricky, with unorthodox strikes and sneaky grappling, but Rodrigues is the more explosive and consistent of the two. If Rodrigues stays composed and avoids the early traps, he should walk away with a finish.
Prediction: Rodrigues via KO/TKO.
Jose Delgado (-145) vs. Hyder Amil
Pick: Jose Delgado Delgado brings high-volume striking, discipline, and intensity to the cage. Amil is a tough competitor, but Delgado’s technical edge in boxing and pressure-based style make him the favorite here. If he can keep it standing and control the tempo, he’ll earn the W.
Prediction: Delgado via unanimous decision.
Tracy Cortez (-205) vs. Viviane Araujo
Pick: Tracy Cortez Cortez has been steadily improving, with a solid wrestling base and rapidly developing stand-up. Araujo is a dangerous athlete but has shown cardio issues in the past. Expect Cortez to stay patient, avoid damage, and outgrind her way to a win.
Prediction: Cortez via decision.
Viacheslav Borshchev (+132) vs. Terrance McKinney
Pick: Viacheslav Borshchev This is a classic “weather the storm” scenario. McKinney is lethal in the first round — but if you survive that, his cardio fades fast. Borshchev’s clean left hook and counter game make him a dangerous opponent, especially if he can drag this fight into round 3.
Prediction: Borshchev via TKO (round 2 or 3).
Jacobe Smith (-2300) vs. Niko Price
Pick: Jacobe Smith These odds are enormous, and for good reason. Smith is expected to steamroll Price. With explosive takedowns and dominant top control, Smith likely finishes early by KO/TKO.
Prediction: Smith by first-round KO/TKO.
Alvin Hines (+350) vs. Johnata Diniz
Pick: Alvin Hines Hines may be the underdog, but his pressure heavy grappling and complete MMA skillset give him a real shot. Diniz is more of a striker with limited experience defending persistent takedown threats. If Hines executes the right game plan (ground and pound), this could be a huge upset.
Prediction: Hines via decision.
Cancelled Fight: Jackson McVey vs. Chris Ewert
This fight was called off just one day before UFC 317. For the record, I had McVey as the underdog pick to watch.
Final Thoughts
UFC 317 promises excitement, with a mix of veterans, rising prospects, and potential statement wins. My most confident picks: Pantoja and Smith. My underdog picks to watch? Charles Oliveira, Brandon Royval, and Alvin Hines.

G Pick: -255 ERIN BLANCHFIELD (Via Betonline.ag) ERIN BLANCHFIELD vs MAYCEE BARBER: This might turn out to be the closest fight on the card. I see this fight going to decision, and it can be anybody’s fight. Blanchfield is entering this fight determined, healthy, and strong. She’s looking to put on a stellar performance and she has a nice road ahead of her to be able to pull of the victory. Barber however, has been having issues cutting weight, and missed weight by half a pound. Barber is as tough of a fighter as they come, she suffocates her opponents with pressure throughout the duration of the entire fight, however, she often walks in on punches. In this fight, I see Blanchfield landing her shots, and avoiding the power punches. I predict Barber to chase Blanchfield around the ring every single round, but never being able to capitalize on big moments that may arise.
G Pick: -150 MATEUSZ GAMROT (Via Betonline.ag) MATEUSZ GAMROT vs LUDOVIT KLEIN: This bout has the potential for fireworks, and can possibly win fight of the night. Klein’s ability to throw his head kick with little to no wind up, no tells, is incredible to watch. Gamrot has got to becareful with his opponents kicks. When Gamrot was fighting Tsarukyan, he was consistently getting hit with kicks to the body. Will Klein be able to expose the chinks in Gamrot’s armor? Or, will Gamrot be able to drag Klein to the ground, drown him in deep waters, and end the fight with a submission? I think so. Gamrot has tremendous strength, speed, and technique on the ground. I don’t think Klein will be able to put up with Gamrot’s relentlessness.
G Pick: +295 Brahimaj (Via Betonline.ag) RAHMIZ BRAHIMAJ vs BILLY RAY GOFF: This bout features two fighters with opposite styles and tactics. Goff is talented on his feet, able to mix up combinations with nice footwork and speed. But, it seems like he doesn’t like fighting off of his back foot, and tends to allow himself to get pressed up against the cage. Brahimaj is a tenacious fighter, who is aggressive and will look for takedowns, clinches, and isn’t afraid to turn this into a rough rugged fight. Brahimaj’s downside? His chin is suspect. The question for this fight for me is, will Brahimaj be able to take down Goff and disrupt his rhythm via ground and pound? Or, will Goff showcase his phenomenal stand up by knocking Brahimaj out? Logically I would choose Goff, but if you’re looking for a big upset on this card, you may have found a pot of gold in Brahimaj. I love rooting for the underdogs, I’ll choose Brahimaj via TKO or decision. Let’s just hope his chin can weather the storm.
G Pick: +153 BRUNO LOPES (Via Betonline.ag) BRUNO LOPES vs DUSTIN JACOBY: Bruno Lopes is the younger fighter heading into this bout here. Jacoby is 37 years old, meanwhile Lopes is 32. Lopes is an aggressive fighter who’s going to keep marching forward until he lands his power shots. He often leaves himself open however, after throwing his punches. When he chooses to throw, the punches are fast, strong, powerful. The holes in his stand up game, is when it’s time to bring those fists back to guard after punching. He’s a bit slow in that department, and Jacoby has proven to be capable of landing one shot sniper shots with his right hand. This is an interesting matchup, but this time I’ll side with the younger more aggressive fighter, Bruno Lopes via Decision, TKO, or KO.
G Pick: -130 MACY CHIASSON (Via Betonline.ag) MACY CHIASSON vs KETLEN VIERIRA: Ketlen Vierira has size and power, but Macy Chiasson is the taller fighter and has longer reach along with a higher punch output. Chiasson may not be as strong and powerful as Vierira, but she has the speed, technique, and output advantage in this bout. I see this fight going the distance, possibly could end up being a boring one, if Chiasson chooses to play it safe. Vierira is the slower fighter out of the two, but once she chooses to explode, watch out. Nonetheless, I predict Chiasson walking away the victor via Decision.
G Pick: +175 Dusko Todorovic (Via Betonline.ag) ZACHARY REESE vs DUSKO TODOROVIC: Zachary Reese has the height and reach advantage in this one. Standing at 6’3 with reach at 77 in. Dusko Todrovic has the physical disadvantage standing at 6’1 with reach at 73 in. I predict this fight to be close, but I see Todorovic being the over aggressor, thus allowing him to take Reese down and finish him via TKO, ground and pound. Reese has great stand up, and throws rapid combinations. Todrovic however, is going to make this fight ugly, get into Reese’s face, and press on the gas pedal. I see Reese becoming overwhelmed and crumbling to the pressure that will produce a flurry of ground and pound punches reigning from the top.
G Pick: +103 JAFAEL FILHO (Via Betonline.ag) ALLAN NASCIEMENTO and JAFEL FILHO are earily the same type of fighters! Body have similar body styles, strength, and match up against each other well on the ground. The difference? Jafel Filho’s body is twitchier than Nasciemento’s. Meaning? Filho’s movement is faster, throws his punches with better fluidity and is swift with his footwork. Filho also throws a high volume of kicks to the legs and body. Taking this into account, I predict Filho to win. I don’t have a strong sense of how, it can either be via Submission, TKO, or Decision.
G Pick: -240 JORDAN LEAVITT (Via Betonline.ag)
JORDAN LEAVITT: Leavitt is a jiu-jitsu specialist who is an aggressive submission artist. However, when met with elite talent (Pimblett) Leavitt’s Jiu-jitsu was no match for Pimblett’s strength, size, and skill set. Nonetheless, if Leavitt gets a novice on the ground, he’s tapping them out. I believe he can get this done against Holobaugh.
KURTT HOLOBAUGH: Holobaugh’s specialty is his stand up. He’s an aggressive stalker who prefers to keep the fight standing up. He throws great hooks with both hands, and can brawl. This fight against Leavitt however, is going to be the exact opposite. Leavitt will feel Holobaugh’s pressure, and immediately clinch and drag the fight to the ground, ultimately pulling off a submission victory in my opinion.
G Pick: -360 BOLAJI OAKI (Via Betonline.ag) BOLAJI OAKI: This is an extremely impressive fighter. High IQ on the feet. Tremendous power but still cautious on how he enters. Nice stiff jab, doesn’t have to rush his flurries, he lets them come naturally. His best punch is his lead hook to the body! This can potentially be open if his opponent is in orthodox stance and doesn’t counter repeatedly or block. Oaki’s weakness? Appears to be the ground game. He’s strong enough to get up if taken down, but there’s a chance a true submission artist could lure Oaki into some traps.
Michael Aswell: No information.
G Pick: +180 ALICE ARELEAN. (Betonline.ag) RAYANNE DOS SANTOS: Rayanne Dos Santos has tremendous talent in the Octagon and she has all the potential in the world, but does she have enough to beat Ardelean? Dos Santos is an aggressive puncher that keeps on rumbling. As a result of this however, Dos Santos leaves herself wide open for shots to the head and the body. The key for victory for Dos Santos is to smother her opponent over and over again until her opponent fatigues out. If Dos Santos goes up against a talented striker who can dance around the ring and keep it up throughout 3 rounds, I believe she’ll lose. Not by KO/TKO, but by decision.
ALICE ARELEAN: Alice Arelean for the victory! I predict Alice Arelean wining this fight due to her poise as a stand up fighter. She can tread lightly around the ring, but when she sits on her punches she packs power mixed with precision. She knows how to pivot and create short angles once she commits to setting her feet. Dos Santos is as tough as they come, but will she be able to survive being picked apart for 3 rounds?
MAIN EVENT: GILBERT BURNS vs MICHAEL MORALES MORALES WINS VIA TKO IN ROUND ONE
ROUND ONE: Burns begins the fight staying on the outside. Both fighters measuring each other. Vicious leg kick lands for Burns. Attacking the lead leg. Morales lands one back in return. Burns lands a flush straight right. Morales lands a right hand of his own. Head kick gets blocked by Morales. Nice jab lands for Morales. Big overhand right lands for Morales. Burns lands a left hook. leg kick by Burns. Morales is twitching his right hand, showing Burns. Morales starts doubling up his jabs. Leg kick lands for Morales. Morales lands a big uppercut. Burns shoots for a takedown and lands it. Morales pops right back up. Morales lands two elbows and breaks away. BIG overhand right lands for Morales. Pummeling Burns over and over again. Towering over Burns, dropping absolute BOMBS. Ref steps in and stops the fight!!! Morales looks incredibly impressive!

#6: Sodiq Yusuff vs Mairon Santos
ROUND ONE: Yusuff starts off the round on the backfoot. Santos landing some kicks. Tipes to the body. Usuff attmpts a strong/fast leg kick. Another Santos tipe to the body. Fight is starting off slow. Both fighters very measured. Good leg kick lands for Santos. Great check by Santos, hurt Yusuff. Santos is checking Usuff’s leg kicks. Santos stalking Yusuff now. Yusuff backs him up a bit via left hook. Yusuff attempts a clinch but Santos is too strong and breaks away. Nice jab an footwork by Santos. Good jab again. Lands a spinning back kick to the body does Santos, but falls to the ground. Yusuff get the better of Santos in this moment and pushes him against the cage. Great takedown defense by Santos. Flips Yusuff to the cage and escapes. End of Round ONE. (Slow start to this fight, unlike the fights previously. Santos was the busier fighter in my opinion, and takes round one)
ROUND TWO: Yusuff opens up with a good head kick, but then gets caught with a head kick by Santos. Immediately begins to retreat. Santos misses a flying knee. Back in the center of the ocatagon are both fighters. Both keeping their range like in the first round. Yusuff has a cut over the eye by Santos’s head kick in the beginning of the round. Santos lands a stiff leg kick, so much power that Yusuff falls to the ground. Santos maintains his range. They end up against the cage and Santos had Yusuff against the cage. Santos has two underhooks onto Yusuff. Yusuff is pawing at Santos’s head. Strong shoulder strike by Santos. Kneeing Yusuff to the knee against the cage. Ref calls for more aciton. Vicious elbow on the breakaway by Santos. Good hook lands for Santos. Checks a leg kick by Yusuff. End of Round TWO. (Santos definitely won this round)
In order for Yusuff to win, I believe he needs a knockout or submission. However, he’s losing the stand up game, and is unable to take down Santos. A big moment needs to happen for him, and he needs to either take advantage or create it.
ROUND THREE: Yusuff comes out aggresive. Aggresive with footwork but not with punching output. Santos continues to check those leg kick by Yusff. Yusuff attempts to elbow, Santos gets out of the way. Leg kick finally lands for Yusuff. Santos now the aggressor though. Another leg kick lands for Yusff. Tipe up the middle of the gut for Santos. Another leg kick lands for Yusuff. Santos is sitting on his punches more, which is why they’re beginning to land. Tipe again to the body for Santos. Santos feints and backs up, blocks a big overhand by Yusuff. Yusuff shoots for a takedown and doesn’t get it. Now up against the cage. Santos is hammer fisting Yusuff’s back, as he’s against the cage. Yusuff is just holding Santos against the cage, similar to the second round. Santos meanwhile remaining busy hammering anything he can. Santos flips and pushes Yusuff against the cage. Break away by fighters. Middle of the cage, tipe to the gut by Santos. Body kick by Santos. Aggressor in the end. (I give this last round to Santos, Yusuff, unable to produce and big moments for himself in the final round)
Mairon Santos wins via Decision.
BREAKING NEWS: RODOLFO BELLATO VS PAUL CRAIG IS CANCELLED DUE TO BELLATO SUSTAINING AN INJURY.
#5: Nursulton Nuziboev vs. Dustin Stoltzfus
ROUND ONE: Stoltzfus opens up the round with a leg kick that misses. Both fighters are feeling each other out, throwing some feints. Lots of leg kicks by Ruziboev. Both of these men have tons of power. Ruziboev landing the cleaner shots so far. Overhand lands. Stoltzfus DROPS Ruziboev! With a cross to the head. Stoltzfus gets a guillotine on Ruziboev as he falls to the ground. Ruziboev trying his best to hold on. He thought about tapping but hung in there. Ruziboev able to revers, and now is on top. Stoltzfus in full guard. They eventually rise to their feet. Ruziboev slugging but missing. Lands a spinning back kick against Stoltzfus’s guard. Big overhands by Ruziboev. Nice hook lands. Ruziboev closing the round strongly. Takes down Stoltzfus. Round ENDS. (This was a tough fight to score, both fighters did damage. Ruziboev ended the round nicely, but too much damaged was produced by Stoltzfus. I give Stoltzfus the first round)
Even though I gave Stoltzfus the first round, I am concerned for his stamina entering the SECOND.
ROUND TWO: Big head kicked thrown by Ruziboev, blocked by Stoltzfus. Big uppercut lands for Ruziboev. Stoltzfus immediately tries to take down Ruziboev. Ruziboev attempts to pull a kimura while being pressed against the cage but fails and gets taken down. On the ground, Stoltzfus is in side mount, and is dripping blood out of his nose. Perhaps broken? Stoltzfus is now trying set up a Darce choke but fails. Ruziboev tries standing up but Stoltszfus pulls a guillotine. Ruziboev escapes and is now on top. Raining in shots from up top. Coaches are calling for elbows. Stoltszfus wraps himself around Ruziboev for a leg lock, but loses control. Ruziboev back on top and landing mean punches, predominately with his right hand. ROUND ENDS (Stoltszfus started off the round great, but ultimately it’s Ruziboev who takes momentum away and walks away dealing the most damage in round two. I give it to Ruziboev)
ROUND THREE: Ruziboev lands a body kick to begin the round. Beautful sweep by Stoltzfus and hits Ruziboev with a big right hand on his way up. Stolstzfus gets caught by a right straight and a hook moments later. Ruziboev now starting to put it on, great right hand straight to the body, followed by a spinning back head kick. Big right straight lands on Stoltzfus. Stoltzfus tries a spinning back kick of his own, too slow and out of range. The right hand is there for Ruziboev. Earlier in the rounds, landed a great uppercut, would like to see him go back to that a couple of times. Stoltzfus shoots for a takedown and gets it. Stoltzfus was able to gain full mount for a few seconds, and lands a couple of shots. Both fighters are up, Stoltzfus tries locking in a standing guilloine but Ruziboev escapes. ROUND THREE ENDS. (This round was hard for me to judge, control goes to Stoltzfus, but damage goes to Ruziboev. In the end, I give this round to Ruziboev)

#4: Costa Melquizael vs. Julian Erosa
ROUND ONE: Costa begins the fight on the backfoot. Nice and steady, slow start for both fighters. Lots of legs kicks from Costa. Erosa is the aggressor in terms of footwork, but in terms of output Costa is beating him to the punch and the kicks. Lots of leg kicks by Costa. So far, there is a stark difference in the stand up, Melquizael absolutely Costa. Lands a vicious head kick. Erosa lands a good strong hook. Momentarily back up Costa. Erosa misses an elbow fired from a mile away and pays the price for it dearly. costa landing head kicks at will. Really taking his time and picking his shots. Erosa is trying to rush Costa but is paying the price each and everytime. Erosa was able to land a takedown against Costa, and this is his path to victory. Round ONE ends. (Costa wins ROUND ONE unanimously)
Round TWO: Costa appears to have sustained a foot injury, doesn’t seem to be grave. Costa begins the round picking Erosa apart, landing jabs, straights, hooks, body kicks. Erosa takes down Costa, Costa is holding onto a guillotine. Erosa stands him up, and is attempting to take his back. Costa was able to keep Erosa off of his back, now both standing in clinch against the cage. Erosa landing knees and shoulder strikes. Costa sweeps Erosa, and escapes. Back on the feet. Nice left straight by Costa. Ones and twos. Doubling up on a pair of straights. Erosa looks depleted. Erosa starting to land some elbows. Costa gets poked in the eye but calls off Herb Dean. Straights are landing at will for the Brazilian. Erosa was able to land a vicious cross onto an unbalanced Costa, almost sending him to the ground. Not sure how hurt the Brazilian is, I think it was due to him being off balanced. (Costa wins ROUND TWO)
In between round 2 and 3: Costa has this fight in the bag, and I think he can produce a stoppage in the 3rd. That left hand is there all day. He went away from his head kicks, I think he can really catch Erosa with that strike again.
ROUND THREE: Erosa pushes Costa against the cage, landing some knees. Erosa tried to trip and bring Costa to the ground but failed. Gets caught by hook on his way up. Erosa is definitely being the aggressor in this third round though. He’s landing some elbows. Costa is not reacting well to the amplified pressure. Erosa putting his fought all the way down on the gas. Erosa is a true fighter. Costa is landing some good shots, but he cannot keep up with this pace. OR maybe he can, Costa now weathering the storm, pushes Erosa down, Erosa more fell down out of exhaustion. This is an absolute brawl. The fight comes to a close. Bravo to both warriors. (I give Costa the edge in this round, landed the cleaner shots. But great aggression displayed by Erosa throughout the entirety of the round)

#3: Matheus Camilo vs. Gabe Green
ROUND ONE: Green starts off the beginning of the first round moving a ton. Switching stances, throwing small feints. Camilo seems like the more grounded fighter here, staying put, landing strong leg kicks. Camilo maintaining the center of the octagon. Everything Camilo throws is with intention, really planting his weight down. Still haven’t seen anything from Green. He’s not committing to throwing any shots. Camilo lands a strong overhand right. 2:40 minute mark: Green is starting to press Camilo more, but Camilo is REALLY sitting on his punches now, eventually pushing Green off with power punches. Green caught Camilo with a check right hook and drops Camilo momentarily. Camilo shot for a takedown in the midst of being stunned, now in the clinch up against the cage. Camilo was able to land a takedown off of the fence. Camilo on top, Green in guard. Camilo landing some nice ground an pound punches from the top. Round one ends. (I have Camilo winning ROUND ONE)
Green needs to sit on his punches, he’s light on his feet like a butterfly but there’s no power, no threat, really nothing offensively for Camilo to worry about.
ROUND TWO: Green comes out the obvious aggressor. Attempts a flying knee, but gets caught in the clinch immediately, and Green gets taken down. Camilo sets in a triangle. Green slams Camilo on the ground trying to survive. Camilo is really trying to gain some torque on that triangle. Green escapes, and jumps on top of Camilo’s back. Camilo lost a lot of stamina trying to lock in that triangle. Green has a triangle body lock. Constantly landing punches onto Camilo. RNC for the win! Gabe Green was able to survive the onslaught from Camilo, it appeared that all of the momentum was on Camilo’s side, but Gabe Green was able to turn it around on the ground. Survived the Triangle. Attacked Camilo’s back, and locked in a swift rear naked end choke. What a wonderful job by Gabe Green on the ground! 3:42 in ROUND TWO by RNC.

Yes. He called and caused the Berlanga vs. Sheeraz press conference to a halt. Turki explained that this card has a direct influence on the sport of boxing, and the outcome of this fight will dictate who Canelo Alvarez will fight next! (After Crawford)
In regards to my latest post, Rolly Romero explained that Turki is overlooking “B” side fighters, and he’s doing it again! By the end of the phone call, Turki sends his regards to Berlanga, but none at all towards Sheeraz.
Turki seems to only be promoting the “A” side fighters. And he’s lazer focused on matching up “A” fighters vs. “A” fighters, which is amazing for the sport! But, he’s not helping promote the “B” side fighters at all. Even blatantly disregarding outcomes of fights where the “B” side or the “underdog” persevere and walk away the victor.
In his phone call interruption, he stated that Garcia vs. Haney is next. Why?! Shouldn’t it be Haney vs Romero? No. Regardless of outcome, Turki is choosing to put the big names against the big names.
This will cause the general public to be happy, but what about the real fans of the sport? This is disgraceful. Why should Garcia be continued to be promoted and pushed after he lost unanimously against Romero? It makes no sense.
What Turki doesn’t realize yet, is that he can create “nobody’s” into generational stars. Current “B” side fighters into “A” side fighters. All through the power of promotion.
However, he’s currently focused on making the best fights on the planet. Choosing big names over pure talent. In the short run this is amazing, but I hope he puts just as much promotion into all fighters, as he does towards the modern day household names. If he doesn’t take notes from the UFC or from WWE, his run could be cut short, regardless of his tall cash.
On May 2nd, 2025, boxing enthusiasts across the world were excited to tune into a triple header. Ryan Garcia vs. Rolly Romero. Devin Haney vs. Jose Ramirez. And Teofimo Lopez vs. Arnold Barboza Jr.
The names of all of these men on one card is an amazing sight to see on paper. Finally, after decades of watching cherry pickers, we’re entering a new era of boxing where the best face off against the best. Multiple household names under the same roof? Live in New York City under the bright lights of Time’s Square, surely this can’t fail right?
Unfortunately, three men failed to walk away with a victory, and so did every customer who paid for the broadcast. Fans felt morally defeated after having to watch a 12 round “Fight” between Devin Haney and Jose Ramirez. A true snooze fest was put on display, and even the bright lights of New York City weren’t bright enough to keep people’s eyes open during this bout. Devin Haney simply outran Ramirez for a U.D. victory, and Jose let him. Jose chased Devin around the ring, was never able to cut him off, and was never able to throw his coveted combinations. Devin on the other hand, put on a masterclass performance, reminiscent of Dale Earnhardt, round and round around the ring danced Haney. Terrible fight to watch.
Rolly Romero and Teofimo Lopez both looked great in their bouts. Romero was able to pull off the stunning victory over Ryan Garcia! A +700 underdog in many books was Romero. Moving up to 147lbs benefited him, versus Garcia looked negatively affected by the change of weight. Ryan Garcia was knocked down in the second round and seemed to lose his confidence for the rest of the fight.
Ryan Garcia had great success with his jab, frequently snapping Romero’s head back, however, Romero kept throwing a beautiful jab to Garcia’s body, over and over again. This was the key to the fight right here, Garcia’s inability to parry, block, or disrupt Romero’s jab to the body cost Garcia this fight. Along with the second round knockdown of course. In the end, this fight was a joy to watch due to Romero being such a big underdog, but there wasn’t as much action as fans had previously hoped for.
Overall, May 2nd 2025 helped saved boxing. We’re seeing a newfound wave of love and money being thrown boxing’s way via Turki Alashikh. He’s putting on cards with household names riddled throughout, not just the main event. This is causing boxing to actually compete with the UFC. However, “Fighters” like Devin Haney are ruining the sport entertainment aspect for fight fans.
